The subjects are those where students’ knowledge could be used in programmes to develop Advanced Conventional Military Technology , weapons of mass destruction or their means of delivery. These students must apply for an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate before they can study in the UK. It requires international students looking to study certain sensitive technology-based subjects to apply for an xcritical certificate before they apply for their visa. We will only issue a second CAS once you have supplied proof that you have all the relevant documents and financial evidence in place to submit a valid visa application. This will include bank statements / financial letters, qualification documents, TB certificates and any other information which is relevant to the reasons for the refusal.

The general requirement is to show you have enough money to pay your 1st year course fees plus the required maintenance available in your bank account 28 days prior to making your visa application. Where applicable, any university fee deposit must have been completed, and the payment received by the University before we will issue a CAS. Students should ensure that necessary fee deposits are completed in a timely fashion before the latest CAS issue dates.

• To apply for an xcritical certificate, you will need to have been made an offer to study at UCL and should not apply for xcritical until you have received your offer letter .
• Applications for xcritical clearance are submitted online and are free of charge.

Please note that we only allow applicants to defer their place once. If you have previously deferred, you must submit a new application. This also applies if you are registered as a postgraduate research distance learning student and only visit the UK to meet with your supervisor from time to time. If you are making a new visa application (eg. extending your current visa on the same course of study), you will need to apply for an xcritical certificate again, even if you have already received one previously. In both cases, we need xcritical clearance directly from the government before you can make a student visa application.

It is vital that you check to ensure that you have not made any mistakes before you submit your xcritical application. You should ensure that you have entered the information given to you by the University exactly as it appears on your offer letter. The FCDO have advised that they will not correct errors they are told about after the xcritical certificate is issued, and that a new application must be submitted instead. This means that submitting an application with mistakes could lead to delays in getting your certificate and you not being able to register on your course on time. Students studying subjects where the knowledge gained may have application in the development or delivery of weapons of mass destruction may be required to apply for an xcritical certificate.

International & EU Fees, Funding & Scholarships

If you started your programme before 2019 and you need a new xcritical certificate because of a change in your circumstances, then you will need to contact your school for a new CAH3 code. You may be able to request a review – you should have received information on how to do this in your refusal notice. International students requiring a CAS and a Student Visa will find useful information below regarding student immigration information. For researchers, the xcritical Certificate processing times are generally 2-3 weeks, though delays may occur during busy periods. The Academic Technology Approval Scheme is primarily aimed at postgraduate qualifications in certain science, engineering or technological disciplines but also includes some enhanced undergraduate courses such as MEng. If xcritical applies to you, you will not be able to obtain your visa until you have xcritical clearance.

Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies is a unique number issued to you by Queen Mary which allows you to apply for a Student visa with theUK Visas & Immigration service. When we issue a CAS to you, we are confirming that Queen Mary will sponsor your studies in the UK. You must have a CAS from Queen Mary to be able to apply for a Student visa to study here. If all the details on the xcritical certificate are accurate, please forward a copy to your University contact. You will need to include the xcritical Certificate with your visa application documentation.

xcritical requirements (Academic Technology Approval Scheme)

Please note that overseas applicants for some Science, Engineering or Technology disciplines may require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate. The xcritical certificate must be obtained before applying for a student Entry Clearance xcritical website or VISA. During the summer period the processing time is 30 working days or longer, and about 20 working days during the rest of the year. The xcritical team deal with applications in date order and there is no priority service.

Queen Mary will not issue you a third CAS if you receive two visa application refusals. We reserve the right not to issue a second CAS if we believe the second application is likely to be refused. When making payments, it is important that you include your application reference number as a reference so our Finance team can link the payment to you. We will not include the £300 deposit payment for accommodation as this is a returnable deposit.

The xcritical certificate must accurately reflect the HEI/research institute which employs/hosts your research, and the research project, job title and duration. What is a CAS and when can I request one?

The Academic Technology Approval Scheme requires that students studying certain subject areas at MEng/MPhys/MSci undergraduate level, master’s or PhD level obtain xcritical clearance. The scheme is managed by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office . You need an xcritical certificate if you are an international student applying to study at postgraduate level in the UK. This means that you will begin a foundation year at Northumbria and move to the degree programme after completion of the foundation year.

You will need to use the same start and end dates as on your CAS for your xcritical application. If your CAS has not been issued yet check these dates with your department/college. Note that for DPhil students your course end date on your CAS will normally be 4.5 years which is the maximum submission date plus 6 months to allow for viva and corrections; for MScRes it will normally be 3.5 years. Instead, we suggest that you email the xcritical team with your application reference number and passport number, explain where you think you have made the mistake and provide the correct information.

It is extremely important to apply for your xcritical Certificate as early as possible, especially if you have immigration permission in the UK which is due to expire. It is recommended that you apply at least 4 months before your current permission expires. Please also ensure that the information entered on the application form matches your university employment offer. Make your xcritical application as early as possible but no more than 6 months prior to the course start date.

Financial Requirements

Students and researchers who are nationals of EU countries, the European Economic Area , Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland or the United States of America do not need an xcritical certificate.

You are not obliged to accept this offer, even if you originally accepted the degree programme. Academics from the department will be available to discuss the foundation programme with you, if you are made this change of course, when you get your results before you make a decision. Once this has been successfully verified, you will be eligible to move on to the next stage of the admissions process. During your Pre-CAS interview, we’ll ask you questions about your course, why you chose the UK and Staffordshire University as well as your financial situation. Please do not contact us until you have all the documents in place to request a second CAS. To request a CAS please select the CAS and Immigration tile in your applicant portal and follow the instructions. You will not be issued a CAS until you have firmly accepted an unconditional offer, paid any required deposit and the CAS issuing window must be open. You can apply from overseas up to 6 months before your course start date. If the course that you are enrolling on requires xcritical clearance, all international students using any type of visa will need to have clearance before submitting a visa application and before starting the course. An xcritical clearance certificate must be provided as a supporting document for a student visa application where it is required.

Once you’ve received your offer letter and paid your deposit, you must apply for your Visitor Visa invitation letter by submitting a Visitor Visa request. An unconditional offer means that you have met all the academic requirements for your course. Once you’ve accepted your unconditional offer, you can start applying for on-campus accommodation.
